Orchid Plant Care

Our orchids are Phalaenopsis — elegant, easy to live with, and in bloom for weeks or even months. The secret is to water less than you think.

How to care for your orchid

  • Bright, not sunny: A bright room a few feet from an east- or north-facing window is ideal. Direct Florida sun scorches the leaves.
  • Comfortable temperature: Orchids like what we like: roughly 65–80°F. Keep them away from air-conditioning vents, cold drafts and heat.
  • Watering: About once a week, when the moss or bark feels dry an inch down. In a decorative planter without a drainage hole, give only a little — about a quarter cup of room-temperature water, poured slowly onto the moss. Never let the roots sit in water.
  • Dry leaves: Keep water off the leaves and out of the center where they meet; if some lands there, dab it dry with a tissue.
  • Feeding: Once a month from spring to early autumn, add orchid food to the water at half the strength on the label. New silvery roots climbing out of the pot are a sign of a happy plant.
  • After blooming: When the last flower falls, cut the stem just above the second node (the small bump) below the flowers. Keep caring for the leaves and it may bloom again. If the stem turns brown, cut it near the base.

Important notes:

  • Keep the stake and clips in place to support the flower stems.
  • Place a mat under the planter to protect your furniture.
  • Flowers and plants are for decoration only — keep them, and their water, out of reach of children and pets.
